Water for Schools Burkina Faso

Location:
Tantiaka, Burkina Faso
Amount Needed:
$1,000
Benefits:
This project benefits 1000 in "La Petite Village", a small bush village in Fada-N'gourma
Implementing Organization:
The BARKA Foundation
In Burkina Faso a little over half of the people have access to clean water and even fewer -12%- have access to adequate sanitation. This project will work with the indigenous people of a bush village, the ‘poorest of the poor’ and the ones who know the most about their situation, to drill a borehole, dig latrines, implement sustainable agricultural practices through small-scale irrigation systems, and work with schools to cultivate a village garden. Water is at the heart of this initiative and it relates to women’s empowerment, food production, sustainable small businesses, girls’ education, healthcare and environmental protection.
Facing the Problem:

Burkina Faso is the 3rd poorest country in the world. 1 in 5 babies die in their mother’s arms. Burkina is ranked last in overall health and development status of mothers and it has the highest illiteracy rate on the planet. All indicators point that things are getting worse. Nutritional status of children has worsened since 1993 and malnutrition is the underlying cause of 50% of all-cause child mortality.
